Core Mechanics Overview
Cover Art by FatalaniSnape
We are still waiting on some feedback but I wanted to give you a look at the mechanics behind Neon Shadows.
Built on Belonging Outside of Belonging, we decided to add some crunchy mechanics to the game that will help those who may be intimidated by free form narrative style games or for those who like a little more structure. The spirit of a narrative TTRPG is still there, this is just to help with certain parts along the way.
Each Suit has a purpose and every character will have special card plays (we will go over that another time)
Diamonds - Logic
Hearts - Intuitive
Clubs - Physical
Spades - Fate
These cards will be used to help make choices or move the story along and is played like a game of War, high card wins with Spades always being a trump (unless stated otherwise in special character movements).
At the beginning of the game, players will draw 5 cards for the day. If a crossroads has happened and players disagree on a choice, they use the cards for their corresponding purpose. Can't decide if you want to rescue people from a burning building? Argue it out, high card wins.
Spades bring in a different dynamic. If a spade is played, go to the fate table and use the corresponding event for the card in your game. This could be to detract from a disagreement, help move a stuck story along, or any other way the players see fit.
The cards will also be used in other ways such as tokens to build party dynamics and have players interact with each other in different ways. This will also play into the growth and stress mechanics. I just wanted to share the core of the mechanics of Neon Shadows as we work on World Building!
